This past summer, Michael Gonzales, the 2012 recipient of the Tedric A. Harris Internship Scholarship, spent eight weeks at Koyo’s facility in Sylvania, Georgia. Michael just started his fourth year at George Southern University where he is pursuing his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.

During his time at Koyo, he was able to gain key insights about the bearing industry and Michael was nice enough to share his experience with us below.

"First, I would like to thank the American Bearing Manufacturing Association for coordinating with David Burke and the Koyo team in Sylvania, Georgia so I could have the opportunity to work in the bearing engineering field first hand. This summer internship has opened my eyes as to what it means to be a bearing engineer. I have learned just how complex and various the processes can become for specific bearing applications. I have been fortunate that the mechanical engineers at the Sylvania plant have been consistently willing to teach and share their experience in bearing engineering. This is truly a great place to be for a young engineer to learn and grow.

I am astounded how proficient the experienced engineers are at problem solving and visualizing potential solutions. From making additions to assemblies on Pro/Engineer software, to upgrading and refitting a machine to run larger diameter grease retained parts, I have been fortunate to contribute my ideas and coordinate with engineers to complete this project. It means a lot to be able to work on a project which could contribute a substantial amount of business to the company. I find it fulfilling when I see assemblies that I have designed improving quality and efficiency because when the Koyo team produces quality product consistently, we earn something priceless; the confidence of our buyers.

Once again I want to give thanks to ABMA for constructing such a wonderful scholarship/internship program. This summer has affirmed that being a Mechanical Engineer is what I have a true passion for. I look forward to continuing my employment at Koyo Bearings while I am finishing my last year at Georgia Southern University. Also, I look forward to my future in engineering and I will continue to implement the knowledge I have acquired here with Koyo Bearings."

Micheal is a motivated young individual with a unique passion for the bearing industry. We received outstanding feedback from his supervisors at Koyo:

"Michael is an exceptional, talented young man and hit the floor running completing activities! His interaction with people at all levels has been wonderful. At this time, we plan to continue to allow him to work approximately 20 hours a week as an engineering tech. Michael states this has been a great learning experience for him. His plan at this time is to continue to stay in school to complete his Master’s"

Paul Beargie, Vice President of Corporate Operations at Koyo noted that this type of exposure is great for our industry epically given the difficulty to find qualified engineers.
