ABMA has built a strong partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection over the past four years as it fights the enormous issue of counterfeit bearings entering the U.S. marketplace. The partnership with Customs is a critical component of our enforcement efforts to stop these inferior products at our borders. On February 28, ABMA returned to Miami at the request of the Port Officials due to a significant increase in bearing seizures over the past few months. The Port of Miami’s success in stopping counterfeits is due in large part to the import specialist team led by Amelia Castelli and Laura Rosenberger. They realize the value and importance of partnering with the industry to combat issues of IP infringement.

ABMA’s message continues to evolve and our current focus is on ensuring Customs Officials understand the issues and trends in attacking counterfeit bearings and the red flags associated with shipments. While we appreciate the work of border agents to seize product, ABMA is now looking to ensure civil and criminal actions are taken when larger seizures occur that meet appropriate thresholds. While seizures may be an annoyance for counterfeiters, fines and jail time have a stronger message. In Miami, ABMA had the opportunity to meet with representatives from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to obtain further insights into how a seizure becomes a criminal case. We expect these new contacts to lead to increased enforcement efforts.

The U.S. counterfeit bearing activity for the first quarter of 2013 is outpacing the past few years and there is no reason to expect these seizure numbers to decrease. ABMA continues to encourage all supply chain partners to ensure they are sourcing from legitimate sources and encourages U.S. government partners to remain vigilant at the borders.
