The 2013 ABMA/AGMA Annual Meeting was held April 25-27 at the beautiful Park Hyatt Avaira in Carlsbad, CA. Based on initial feedback, the meeting offered memorable speakers and timely topics along with impactful networking and unique experiences for the meeting attendees.

On the Thursday morning, various ABMA committees and the Board of Directors met to ensure a continued focus on our strategic initiatives and monitor the progress on key activities. Following these meetings, the entire ABMA membership came together Thursday afternoon for a luncheon followed by the ABMA Business Meeting. During the business meeting, ABMA President Scott Lynch outlined the highlights of 2012 while also providing direction for the year ahead. Additionally, Mr. Lynch was pleased to announce that three new companies have joined the association in 2013 as associate members, expanding the associate membership category to 13 supplier companies. Representatives from the new member companies were all present at the meeting. ABMA also announced Brian Harrell from Penn State and Michael Spinelli of Carnegie Mellon are the 2013 recipients of the Tedric Harris Bearing Industry Internship and will be working this Summer at SKF and Schaeffler respectively.

Former Major League baseball player Jim Abbott kicked off the general sessions on Thursday afternoon. He touched attendees with his story of overcoming adversity and obstacles to reach his goal of becoming a professional baseball player. Jim is an inspiration to all and reminded everyone that in order to move forward and reach our goals, we must be willing to adapt. On Friday morning, Jay Timmons, President and CEO of NAM, shared his outlook for the US manufacturing sector and how our members can engage with policymakers to encourage policies that will help their businesses thrive and the session concluded with presentations on key industry sectors with Richard Aboulafia sharing his insights on the aerospace industry while Daniel Campion, Director of Turbomachinery Operations for Solar Turbines, provided insights into the industrial gas turbine industry and the trends in the oil and gas industry that will effect capital equipment spending over the next few years.

On Friday evening, ABMA members had the opportunity to attend a special Salute to the Military off-site event at the Miramar Air Station which is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing of the United States Marine Corps, known as "America’s 9-1-1 Force.” The Marines of 3d MAW are the world’s best fighter pilots and have successfully perform a wide variety of combat and support missions in F/A-18 Hornet fighter attack jets, CH-46 Sea Knight and CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters and the KC-130 Hercules transport and aerial refueling aircraft. Attendees visited the flight line and had the opportunity to look in the cockpit of F-14’s. After visiting the flight line, there was a dinner at the famous officers club where Miramar’s Commanding Officer addressed the group. Finally, attendees had the opportunity to send a postcard to the troops and visit with active duty pilots.

On Saturday morning, Jim Meil, Vice President and Chief Economist for the Eaton Corporation, spoke about the current economic issues by addressing the question ‘Cliffs, Caps and Ceilings – Is the US Economy Sprinting or Slogging?’ Following Mr. Meil’s presentation, Dr. Andrea Scanavini, CEO of Somaschini North America, provided a unique perspective on the European power transmission market. Finally, Kaihan Krippendorff closed the meeting by providing the attendees with a methodology to out think the competition. His speech, based on his book, OUTThink the Competition, inspired attendees to innovate, defy dogmas and seek the ‘fourth option’.

During the closing reception, ABMA recognized its 25 year company members and long-time ABMA member, Rock Baty. ABMA is pleased to announce that Baldor Dodge, Koyo Corporation of USA and NN, Inc. have achieved 25 years with the association. These companies join our 50 and 75 year members that we recognized at previous meetings.

In addition, ABMA recognized Rock Baty for his invaluable contribution to the association and the bearing industry . Mr. Baty has decided to retire from NN, Inc. after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer since July of 1997. Throughout the years, Mr. Baty has been a vital member of ABMA. Not only has he emerged as a leader in the bearing industry but also as a leader within the association. With his continuous motivation and inspiration, he has made a profound impact on everyone around him. We sincerely appreciate his contribution to the association and wish him the best on his future endeavors.

This meeting would not have been as successful without the support of our meeting sponsors. ABMA would like to thank American Roller Bearing, AJAX Rolled Ring and Machine, Emerson Industrial Automation, New Hampshire Ball Bearings, NTN, NSK, Schaeffler Group and Specialty Ring Products for supporting the Annual Meeting through their contributions.
