On Monday, June 24, ABMA hosted its second webinar of a series titled The Importance of Surface Topography. The webinar provided attendees with an introductory overview that covered basics of surface topography and how it affects the performance of bearings. Included were nomenclature & definitions, measurement methods, effects on lubrication, surface wear and fatigue.

The webinar was instructed and moderated by Silvio Vasconi and Jim Oliver of SKF USA Inc. Silvio has more than 10 years of experience in engineering consulting and is currently the Regional Manger of the SKF USA Engineering Consultancy. Jim has over 28 years of experience in engineering and is currently the Director of Technical Sales Support.

At the conclusion of the webinar, attendees were able to understand the basic roughness measurement physical principles, identify the most important height parameters of roughness according to ISO, understand the effect of surface topography in bearing life and associate certain bearing failure modes with poor lubrication.
