The 2013 ABMA Fall Meeting was held October 28-29 at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, VA and had the largest total attendance of any Fall Meeting in recent history. For the second year in a row, the meeting included a joint reception and dinner with the Bearing Specialist Association (BSA) which provided an opportunity for our members to connect with colleagues, enhancing and building strong industry relationships.

Prior to the general meeting activities, various committees met and charted a course to 2014 initiatives, including the Associate Council who now has representatives from fifteen supplier companies. The supplier membership category has grown significantly since it was first implemented in 2010 and has had nothing but a positive impact on the association. The 2013 Fall Meeting offered supplier members the opportunity to enhance key business relationships and forge new ones by engaging with the leading bearing manufacturers through direct dialogue and exhibits. On Tuesday afternoon, ABMA introduced a new feature to the Fall Meeting called Networking in Motion where supplier members had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with CEOs and key decision makers from ABMA's primary manufacturing member companies. From all accounts, the event was a success and allowed both the suppliers and manufacturers to obtain insights that will ultimately impact their bottom line.

During the business meeting on Tuesday morning, ABMA President Scott Lynch outlined the highlights of 2013 while also providing direction for the year ahead. Additionally, the business meeting included presentations from ABMA's new associate members: Sentient Science and Specialty Steel Treating. They briefly introduced their company to the membership and outlined the services they provide to the bearing industry.

Dr. Chad Moutray, Chief Economist at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), opened the General Session by sharing his insights on current economic trends and provided attendees with understanding around the impact of those trends on growth possibilities in the manufacturing sector and general economy. Dr. Moutray is the chief economist for the NAM where he serves as the NAM's economic forecaster and spokesperson on economic issues.

The General Session concluded with a presentation from Cliff Waldman, Global Economist for the Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI. Mr. Waldman shared his perspectives on the ever changing workforce challenges in the manufacturing sector. His role within MAPI has him focused on jobs numbers but he also researches workforce trends and regularly writes and speaks on US and global economic trends and conducts specialized research in a number of areas. Mr. Waldman coauthored a cutting edge study on manufacturing innovation which was published in the October 2007 edition of Business Economics and for which he received an award from the National Association for Business Economics.

The General Session was open to all ABMA members and based on initial feedback, the attendees found both presentations very valuable. Copies of both presentations are available in the members only section on our website.
