Dan Snyder
Engineering Consultant
Bearings and Lubes Consulting LLC

Dan Snyder has nearly 50 years experience in the bearing field.   He has extensive experience with the design, application, life and performance analysis, lubrication, testing and failure analysis of rolling element bearings.

Mr. Snyder is a registered professional engineer and the author of various technical publications and industry trade publication articles.  He has worked on various ISO Working Groups for rolling bearings and currently is a member of the ABMA’s  Technical Adversary Groups for ISO (TAG) and ANSI (B3).. He is also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and  the Society of Tribology and Lubrication Engineers.

Mr. Snyder has worked for the Timken Company and SKF USA Inc. and has had his own consulting business, Bearing and Lubes Consulting, LLC, since retiring from SKF as Director of Application Engineering.  He has been an instructor and consultant for ABMA courses for several years.  

Michael Kotzalas
Chief Engineer - Product Design - Global TRB
The Timken Company

Mike Kotzalas is chief engineer for the Timken Company’s China business unit in Shanghai, China.  He has been employed at Timken since 1999. He has extensive experience in practical application of bearings and studied under Tedric Harris at Penn State University.

Mike co-author of the Rolling Bearing Analysis 5th Edition – Two Volume Set with Ted Harris. These books are the basis for ABMA’s Essential and Advanced Concepts course.

Mike is an active member of technical societies, currently serving on the Nominations and Oversight Committee for the ASME Tribology Division. He is the author of more than 26 publications, including

Rolling Bearing Analysis 5th Edition, holds two patents on rolling bearings and has received the 2001 Best Paper Award from the ASME Tribology Division, the 2003 and 2006 STLE Hodson Award and the 2007 SAE Off-Highway Outstanding Young Engineer Award.

Dr. Tim Ovaert
Professor of Mechanical Engineering

University of Notre Dame

Dr. Tim Ovaert is currently a professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. In addition to teaching mechanical engineering design, reliability engineering, and tribology, he conducts research on materials characterization, materials for tribological applications, and manufacturing. 

His current research interests are in biomechanics, the tribology of advanced materials, mechanical design, and manufacturing. Tim Ovaert received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois-Urbana and his Master of Engineering Management and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. His industry experience includes serving as Plant Engineer at the DuraBar Division of Wells Manufacturing Company. Previously, he was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State.

He has served as a technical consultant to more than twenty-five medium to Fortune 100 companies. He was named a National Young Investigator by the National Science Foundation, and is the recipient of the Ralph R. Teetor Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Burt L. Newkirk Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Ovaert has served as an associate editor for the ASME Trans., Journal of Tribology, and as the Chair of the ASME/STLE International Joint Tribology Conference. He is the author and/or co-author of over 80 technical publications, and is a Fellow of the ASME.

Dr. Ovaert has been a long standing instructor with ABMA’s Continuing Education Program and currently teaches portions of all three courses.


Vern Wedeven
Wedeven Associates, Inc. 

Vern Wedeven has led the development of custom tribology research and testing capabilities at Wedeven Associates, Inc over its twenty-five year history.  The focus is to explore the micro-world of tribology mechanisms with useful engineering parameters and measurements providing science meaning.   The test machines and test methods have supported the developed of oil formulations and advanced bearing and gear materials in the aerospace industry.  He has vast experience in failure analysis and lubrication and failure mechanisms of high speed aero propulsion components.  His previous experience and tribology research includes employment at, SKF-MRC Aerospace, NASA Lewis (Glenn) Research Center and NASA Headquarters.

Vern Wedeven is a graduate of Calvin College (BS), University of Michigan (BSME) and Imperial College, London, Ph.D.  He is the author of over seventy technical papers in the area of tribology.  He has authored chapters in three books and he holds three patents.  He is a Fellow of STLE and the recipient of several awards: Walter D. Hodson Award (1975) for best published paper in STLE by an author under age of 35 years, Captain Alfred E. Hunt Award (1979) for best paper published in STLE, Arch T. Colwell Cooperative Engineering Metal for contributions of SAE Propulsion Lubricants Committee and the STLE International Award (2008) for outstanding contributions in tribology.   

Chuck Coe
Grease Technology Solutions, LLC

Mr. Coe holds a BS Chemical Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, along with NLGI CLGS and STLE CLS professional certifications. He worked for Mobil and ExxonMobil for 32 years, including 6 years as ExxonMobil’s Grease Technology Manager and many years as an industrial oil and grease formulator and technical advisor.  He retired from ExxonMobil and launched Grease Technology Solutions LLC, a grease training and consulting business in 2009. 

He is NLGI President and is the Grease Education Course Chair of STLE.  He has authored several technical papers and articles on grease, and received Best Marketing Paper and Best Paper awards from both NLGI (2008) and ELGI (2009), and
the John A. Bellanti Memorial Meritorious Service Award (2012) from NLGI. E-mail:
