What you need to know about Bearing Adjustment, Clearance and Setting


The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the variables that impact mounted bearing clearance or mounted setting. By the end of the session, the attendees will be able to describe the process to select the proper amount of internal clearance for a given bearing style. This session is important because proper selection of bearing clearance, thermal gradients, shaft and housing fits will optimize the load zone of the bearing.  This in turn reduces the stress within the bearing and optimizes the L10 life.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to define and identify bearing class and tolerance for key product types
  • Attendees will be able to define and describe the process for measuring internal clearance for non-adjustable bearing types
  • Attendees will be able to calculate the impact of interference fits and thermal effects on bearing internal clearance

Effect of Contact Geometry on Ball Bearing Performance

This webinar provides an introduction to ball bearing raceway contact geometry and the impact of various factors on bearing performance. Moderated by Les Miller, VP of Engineering at Kaydon, the webinar will highlight the influence of ball bearing contact geometry on contact stress, bearing deflections (stiffness), friction torque and fatigue life.

The course is instructed by Rob Roos, Principal Product Engineer at Kaydon, who has more than 15 years of bearing industry experience and provides design and application support for bearing users across a variety of industries and applications.

Bearing Nomenclature

Description: This webinar is designed to provide a guide to the understanding of the basic rolling element bearing part number system used for primary bearing types and how special features of the bearing are described using prefixes and suffixes. It will demonstrate that while bearing manufacturers using the ISO numbering system will have similar basic part numbers, they will use different prefix and suffix nomenclature to describe the special features of the bearing.  Examples will be given.

The course is moderated by Jim Oliver, Director of Application Engineering for SKF USA Inc., with 29 years in the bearing industry and Kathleen Bommer, Application Engineer for SKF with 5 years in both OEM and aftermarket technical support.

Bearing Failure Modes & Their Causes

DescriptionAs covered under previous ABMA webinars, the calculation of bearing life is based on the basic fatigue life of the bearing material and certain assumptions of the usage conditions considering the application.  However, many times bearings do not achieve their calculated life, in effect suffering an early life failure.  These early life failures are usually the result of unanticipated usage conditions, improper bearing installation, handling, maintenance, lubrication methods, and contamination.  This webinar will address many of the more common bearing failure modes, their causes, and what to do in case of a failure. 

This course will be moderated by Bimal Nathwani, Application Engineering Manager at NSK Corporation, with over 20 year in the bearing industry and presented by Dean Thayer, Senior Development Engineer at NSK Corporation, with nearly 10 years in the bearing industry.

Understanding Bearing Lubrication

Grease Fundamentals

Description: This webinar covers the definition of grease, how it differs from oil, what it is comprised of, how its manufacture differs from oil blending, typical property definitions, pros and cons of different thickener types and compatibility concerns. Bearing Fatigue Life and Industry Standards


This webinar provides an introduction to bearing fatigue life calculation as set forth in industry standards. The presentation will offer an overview of the relevant industry standards, explain fatigue failure mechanisms and define concepts such as dynamic equivalent load, dynamic load rating and fatigue limit that are essential to understanding fatigue life calculations. We will also review the basic life and modified life calculation methods described in ISO 281:2007. Effect of Geometry on Roller Bearing Performance
